Private Fell & Campfire Experience

Set out on snowshoes with a guide across Karu Lodge’s private fell area towards the summit of Yli-Luosto. The route leads through old-growth forest and among snow-laden trees, and along the way we stop at an unusual natural feature – a place where the fell seems to breathe as warm air rises through the rocky scree.

At the summit, we settle onto reindeer hides by the open fire to enjoy the views, a hot drink and Karu Lodge’s own cookies. On a clear evening, the stars and the Milky Way may appear above us – and, with a little luck, the Northern Lights as well.

On the way back, those who wish can travel part of the descent by sled on a safe section chosen by the guide, adding a little more speed and fun to the end of the fell adventure.

This guided snowshoe hike takes place on Karu Lodge’s private fell area, approximately 8 km from Luosto.

Snowshoeing Towards the Summit

The fell experience takes you on snowshoes across Karu Lodge’s private fell area, through old forest and towards the summit of Yli-Luosto. The route climbs the fell slope among snow-laden trees, offering both physical challenge and time to stop and take in the surrounding winter nature.

The experience begins by meeting at Karu Lodge’s red main building. Your guide will introduce the snowshoes and other equipment, explain how to move with snowshoes and go through the safety instructions for the route. From there, we set out through the forest towards the fell.

The first part of the route leads through old-growth forest, where the landscape gradually changes into the fell slope surrounded by snow-laden trees. Along the way, we also stop at an unusual natural feature – a place where the fell seems to breathe. Warm air rises through the rocks, melting the snow and revealing the rocky scree beneath.

The climb to the summit is long and requires a good basic level of fitness. We move at an unhurried pace and take breaks along the way. The aim is not to reach the summit as quickly as possible, but to enjoy the journey itself.

At the summit, we stop by the open fire. Sitting on reindeer hides, there is time to rest, enjoy the views and have a hot drink with Karu Lodge’s own cookies. During the day, the surrounding fell and forest landscapes open up around you, while on a clear evening the stars and the Milky Way may appear above – and, with a little luck, the Northern Lights as well.

We cannot promise stars or Northern Lights, as they always depend on nature and weather conditions.

On the way back, we descend from the fell towards the main building. If snow and weather conditions allow, those who wish can swap their snowshoes for a sled and enjoy part of the descent at a faster pace. The guide selects a safe section for sledding according to the conditions of the day.
