Ice Fishing in the Peace of Our Private Pond

Experience traditional Finnish ice fishing in the peaceful surroundings of Karu Lodge’s private pond, surrounded by old-growth forest and the winter landscape of Lapland. This small-group experience combines time outdoors on the ice with a warm Finnish soup lunch in our cosy fireplace room right by the pond.

The experience begins at Karu Lodge’s red main building at Yli-Luostontie 358, Luosto. From there, it is only a very short walk to the private pond. There is no long transfer through the forest or demanding hike before the activity – the pond, warm indoor facilities and fireplace room are all located close together.

Your guide will first explain how to move safely on the ice and introduce the ice fishing equipment. You will then make your own hole in the ice and learn the basics of traditional Finnish ice fishing: how to use the fishing rod, move the lure and recognise when a fish may be interested in the bait.

No previous ice fishing experience is needed. All necessary equipment is provided, and your guide will be there to help throughout the experience.

Then it is time to slow down and try ice fishing at your own pace. Surrounded by old-growth forest and winter silence, you can experience the simple rhythm that has made ice fishing part of Finnish winter life for generations. A catch can never be guaranteed – sometimes the fish cooperate and sometimes they do not – and that unpredictability is part of the experience.

Whenever you wish, you can step inside the warm fireplace room only a few steps from the ice. This makes the experience comfortable even on colder winter days and especially suitable for guests who want to experience Arctic nature without a long walk or physically demanding excursion.

After time on the ice, gather in the warm fireplace room for a traditional Finnish soup lunch served with bread and butter. Enjoy the warmth of the fire, a hot drink and a handmade cookie while hearing stories about Karu Lodge, the surrounding nature and the history of the place.

This is not simply a fishing trip. It is a relaxed small-group experience combining Finnish winter traditions, local food, peaceful nature and the comfort of a warm lakeside base.

Ice fishing is a calm activity, and you may feel the cold more quickly when standing or sitting still than when moving. Warm winter clothing is therefore especially important.

We recommend:

• a warm winter overall, or winter trousers and a winter jacket
• warm winter boots, preferably with wool socks
• a warm hat
• warm gloves or mittens
• a neck warmer or scarf
• warm layers underneath your outerwear

Very easy. There is almost no walking required, and the warm fireplace room is located directly next to the ice fishing area.

The experience is suitable for families with children. Children take part in ice fishing under adult supervision and according to the guide’s instructions. With younger children, time spent on the ice can be kept shorter, and they can warm up indoors whenever needed.
