The experience begins by meeting at Karu Lodge’s red main building. From there, we take a short walk to Karu Lodge’s private pond. Right by the water are our traditional smoke sauna Susi and a warm fireplace room, which serves as the base for the ice fishing experience.
Your guide will first explain how to move safely on the ice and introduce the equipment. We then make holes in the ice and learn the basics of ice fishing: how to use the fishing rod, how to move the lure and how to recognise when a fish may be interested in the bait.
No previous ice fishing experience is needed. All necessary ice fishing equipment is included, and your guide will be there to help throughout the experience.
After that, there is time to try ice fishing at your own pace and enjoy the surrounding winter nature. Part of the charm of ice fishing is the waiting – you never know what might rise from beneath the ice, or whether anything will bite at all. We cannot promise a catch, but we can promise the experience of traditional Finnish ice fishing.
Between fishing sessions, you can warm up in the heated fireplace room whenever you wish. This makes the experience comfortable even on colder winter days and a good choice for guests who prefer not to take part in a long walk or physically demanding excursion.
During the experience, we also spend time by the open fire enjoying a hot drink and a handmade cookie. There is time to warm up, talk and hear stories about Karu Lodge and the history of the place.
What to Wear
Ice fishing is a calm activity, and you may feel the cold more quickly when standing or sitting still than when moving. Warm winter clothing is therefore especially important.
We recommend:
- a warm winter overall, or winter trousers and a winter jacket
- warm winter boots, preferably with wool socks
- a warm hat
- warm gloves or mittens
- a neck warmer or scarf
- warm layers underneath your outerwear
Duration: approximately 2 hours
Physical level: very easy – there is no long walk to reach the pond, and the warm fireplace room is located right next to the ice fishing area.
Group size: maximum 10 guests.
Prices:
- Adults and guests aged 11 and over: €79/person
- Children aged 4–10: €59/person
- Children aged 0–3: free of charge when accompanied by a paying adult
Children
The experience is also suitable for families with children. Children take part in ice fishing under adult supervision and according to the guide’s instructions. With younger children, time spent on the ice can be kept shorter, with the option to warm up in the fireplace room whenever needed.
